Why AC Prices Are Rising and What You Can Do About It

Thinking About a New AC System? Here’s What to Know Before You Buy

Noticing uneven temperatures or higher energy bills? Your AC could be to blame. As systems age, they use more energy, cool less effectively, and can break down when you need them most.

If you’ve started looking into replacing your AC, you’ve probably noticed that prices are higher than they used to be, leaving many homeowners wondering how to plan and budget for the future.

The good news? Understanding what’s changing—and why—can help you time your upgrade and get the best value for your home.

Why Are AC Prices Going Up?

It’s not just inflation. A significant change in refrigerants is reshaping how air conditioners are made—and driving prices up. The Environmental Protection Agency will require all newly manufactured systems to use eco-friendlier refrigerants. This affects design, production, shipping, and installation, adding cost at every step.

So, what exactly changed? And what does it mean for homeowners?

R-410A vs. A2L: The Refrigerant Shift Behind the Price Hike

For nearly 20 years, most AC systems have used R-410A refrigerant. But due to environmental concerns, that’s changing. Beginning in 2025, all new systems must be built for A2L refrigerants, a new class of lower-impact refrigerants with a smaller climate footprint.

Why Is Supply So Limited—and What Does That Mean for Me?

New rules mean the types of AC systems available are changing—and so are prices and availability. Here’s what that means for your options and costs:

A2L Systems (2025 and Beyond)

A2L refrigerants don’t work with older, pre-2025 AC equipment. These new systems need redesigned parts, updated tools, and extra technician training, which adds time and cost. Combined with global shortages and tariffs, these new systems can cost up to 20–30% more than pre-2025 models.

R-410A Systems (Pre-2025)

Pre-2025 systems using R-410A are still available and serviceable, but supplies are shrinking as manufacturers focus on newer models. Because these units cost less and are proven reliable, acting now can secure a trusted system at a better price. These models are proven, budget-friendly, and fully supported with parts and service.

The key takeaway: Upgrading to a pre-2025 system now increases the chance of getting a trusted unit before supplies get even tighter and prices rise further.

What If I Have an Older AC System? Will It Still Work?

If your current R-410A system works well, there’s no rush—these systems are still safe, legal, and fully supported. R-410A and parts will be available for years, likely into the 2040s. But if your system is getting older or not working well, this is a good time to think about your options.

In short, no rush—but it’s smart to consider your options if a replacement is already on the horizon.

Who’s in the Best Position to Upgrade Right Now?

Homeowners with older, less efficient AC systems stand to gain the most by making a move now. Upgrading to a reliable R-410A system now can save you money and help you avoid supply shortages and steeper prices.

If you’re considering waiting for post-2025 AC models, be prepared for a higher investment cost and potentially limited availability in the early rollout.

But keep in mind: the newer 2025 refrigerants aren’t backwards compatible, so when your pre-2025 system does need replacing, swapping in a new unit will likely mean updating your whole setup, including refrigerant lines.

Rebates, Credits, and Incentives in Minnesota

Upgrading your AC might feel costly, but there may be local rebates or tax credits to help. Minnesota homeowners can often find support through utility companies, state programs, or federal incentives, usually for high-efficiency systems. Programs change frequently, so it’s a good idea to check with your utility provider or the Minnesota Department of Commerce for the latest details.
